House OKs $302 billion budget

The Texas House approved a $302 billion budget last week that included an amendment prohibiting the use of state money on private school tuition — a major setback to Gov. Greg Abbott’s plan to establish a school voucher system. The Austin American-Statesman reported that more than 20 Republicans joined nearly all House Democrats to pass the amendment, while 11 lawmakers voted present.

However, one of the key figures of that era, Benjamin Franklin, still had an impact on Texas and its own independence decades later. Richard Bache, Jr., Franklin’s grandson, fought in the Texas Revolution, served in the Texas navy, and served in the first sessions of the Texas State Senate.

Dear Editors, Imagine going more than 20 years without a pay raise. That’s exactly what retired state workers are facing. The Legislature hasn’t increased our Employees Retirement System (ERS) benefits since 2001, even though the state has found a way to give more to retired teachers over the past few years (which they deserve), and Social Security increases our pension checks every year.
