Alvis A. Dorsey

Alvis A. Dorsey, age 93, passed away on Thursday, October 8, 2020 in Houston, Texas. Mrs. Dorsey was born on April 23, 1927 in Jasper, Texas.

She earned a B.S. and Master’s degree from Prairie View Texas A&M University specializing in education. Teaching was her passion and she taught for 34 years as an English teacher at various schools before retiring in 1987. After retirement, she continued to substitute for Arkansas High School and Linden-Kildare High School doing classroom interventions and homebound classes. She was a member of the Business & Professional Women’s Club of Linden, the Women’s Auxiliary of Unity District Baptist Association, the Dr. Martin Luther King Club, and the Pleasant Hill Quilting Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Nancy Adams, husband Archie E. Dorsey, and siblings Lester Adams, Alvis Adams, LaVera Adams Griner, Geneva Marshall, Evelt Coleman, Roosevelt Coleman, Sherman Coleman, and Naomi Simmons.

She is survived by two children, RaDell Dorsey (Mary) of Texarkana, Arkansas and Dr. Schuwan Dorsey of Houston Texas, Raymond Griner of Houston, Texas, whom she considered like a son, Christie Glasco (Wayne of LaPorte, Texas whom she considered like a daughter, two grandchildren, Pamela Dorsey McClendon (Carl) of Nacogdoches, Texas and Archie Tyrone Dorsey of Killeen, Texas, five great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Visitation will be on October 16, from 12 P.M. to 5 P.M. at Reeder Davis Funeral Home in Linden, Texas. Funeral services will be held at Pinecrest Baptist Church on October 17 at 11 A.M. with Pastor Walter August, Jr officiating. Flowers may be delivered to Reeder Davis Funeral Home.
