Winnie Mozelle Scales Smith
November 3, 1927 - October 18, 2022
Winnie Mozelle Scales Smith of Atlanta, Texas passed away peacefully October 18, 2022 with her children by her side.
Mozelle was born November 3, 1927 in Atlanta, Texas to Willie Wayne Scales and Winnie Davis Barnwell. She was a Christian, a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a friend to all who knew her.
As a young girl Mozelle grew up on the family farm where she loved reading. Her favorite chore was churning butter as she could sit and read as she churned and would read late into the night by oil lamp.
She loved her elementary schooling at the Blalock Community School and graduate from Atlanta High School in 1944. After high school Mozelle went to work at Lone Star Ammunition Plant. It was while working there during WWII that she and other women would write their names and addresses on the ammunition crates that were sent overseas. While she did correspond with several soldiers it was a young marine Carlton Douglas Smith that she fell in love with. A love that traveled across oceans and seas and that a world war could not stop. When Carlton returned from overseas he went immediately to Mozelle and after one week they were married on September 2, 1945 in Bossier City, Louisiana.
Mozelle and Carlton lived and worked in a variety of interesting occupations over the years and ultimately settled at her old family farm in 1963. Both worked and retired from Red River Army Depot.
She loved her home and family and spent many years working on her family genealogy. Mozelle was involved with her local Daughters of the American Revolution, Genealogical Society, Atlanta Women’s Club, and Cass County Elections and was a member of First Baptist Church, Queen City.
Mozelle was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 52 years, Carlton Douglas Smith; and brothers, Charles Scales and Delano Scales.
She is survived by her son, William Douglas Smith of Atlanta, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Staton Green of Haines City, Florida; grandsons, Doug and Kathy Smith of Atlanta, Greg and Melo Smith of Queen City, and Chris and Joyce Smith of Texarkana, Arkansas; great-grandchildren, Trevor Smith, Heather and John Pruitt, Chris Smith, Nicole Smith and many nieces and nephews.
A private graveside service will be held at Queen City Cemetery, under the direction of Hanner Funeral Service with Bro. Gary Terry officiating.
The family would like to extend their deep gratitude to everyone at Wesley House Assisted Living in Atlanta, Texas and special thanks to Carla Sullivan who took special care and loved our mom. Also we are thankful to Tiffany and Misty with Heritage Hospice who were so helpful and compassionate during mom’s final days.
