On January 18, 2024, the candidates running for District 1 answered a series of questions were current Texas politics and problems were addressed. The meeting billed as “Potatoes and Politics” was an opportunity to learn a little more about the Texas House District 1 candidates while enjoying a bake potato bar. Cass County Judge Ransom acted as the moderator for the event. The event was hosted by the Cass County Republican Party at the Mattie Lanier Richey Center.

Grand jury not prosecuting over death of grocery worker

A Cass County grand jury has decided not to prosecute the owner of the rifle that caused the death of a Queen City man – Crumps Grocery worker. District Attorney said “a case for criminally negligent homicide was (originally) brought against the rifle owner and the grand jury chose not to bring an indictment. Shelton added that based on the grand jury’s vote and the wishes of Lawrence’s family, her office will not be pursuing charges in this case.” KETK A worker at a local grocery store tragically lost his life while placing groceries in a customer’s vehicle. According to reports Larry Lawrence, 39, of Queen City was shot when a loaded rifle discharged in the backseat and killed the employee. The owner of Crumps, Chris Spencer, reported the sad news on Facebook saying that the customer’s dog accidentally stepped on the loaded gun.

James Cicero Fant

James Cicero Fant, third child of Edward Waldo and Sarah Caroline (Simmons) Fant of South Carolina, was born Sept. 1, 1866 in Anderson District, South Carolina. He died July 13, 1923 in Hot Springs, Ark. where he had gone for medical treatment. He came to Cass County, Texas in 1871 with his parents from South Carolina at the age of five. His grandfather, the Reverend David Monroe Simmons, a Baptist Minister for many years, and his family were among the immigrants on the wagon train. Rev. Simmons was a successful revivalist. He was actively engaged in the ministry of the Baptist Bear Creek Church, Cass County.
