What’s in a name and why spelling matters
To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the founding of Atlanta, we will be offering historical stories and photos each week throughout 2022. This second installment tells about the people that owned the land upon which Atlanta was founded, and was researched using various historical documents and old newspaper articles.

This is Hugh O’Keefee Greene & Louisiana Farr Greene’s family and their home at Forest Hill. Hugh Oliver Green, Louisiana, Hugh, Ammie Lou Greene Goldsberry, Tom Turner with the purse, Finis Greene Plumley, Libbie Greene Powell, and beside the fence, Ida Jane Greene Turner pregnant with William Nebraska Turner. Hugh’s family (Lemuel Daniel Greene & Pharibee Jane Hall came from Greene County, Georgia in the 1850s on the way to the black land around Dallas. Their wagon broke down in Douglassville and it reminded them of home so they stayed. Lou’s family (Joseph Bentley Farr & Charity Annis Rose Farr came from Upson County, Georgia. Worn out from cooking from the Christmas and New Years’ holidays? Are you constantly on-the-go between work and home? Allow us to take the load off you from cooking every Friday from January 7th - February 25th! The JE Manning American Legion Post 258 and VFW Post 5870 are joining forces to provide you with dinner! The menu is set and plates are $10 per plate including the main dish, drink (tea or water), bread and possibly an additional side or dessert! We will be serving from 5pm-8pm at 308 N. Louise St. in Atlanta, TX. If you simply need volunteer hours or you, your friends, family or other organizations (Honor Societies, Young Adults 14+, Church, etc.) are interested in donating supplies, help serve, pass out food, prep or clean up, please reach out to Post Commander, Mike Steward, at 903-796-9918 (home) or 903-490-4077 (cell) or Jerry Porter at 903-748-5964.
