It was evening in Chengdu, China on September 11, where I taught English at Sichuan University, twelve hours ahead of Central Time in the US. My son called me from a high-rise office tower in downtown Chicago and told me in a surprisingly calm voice of that day’s horror. There was fear that other large cities were still at risk and he had helped evacuate the floor where he worked.

Ethan Stewart, a member of the Children of the Republic of Texas (CRT), James Bowie Chapter, Texarkana, was recently awarded the $1,000 CRT Leadership Scholarship and also the $500 CRT Texan Navy of the Republic of Texas Scholarship. To qualify for CRT Scholarships, one has to be a descendant of an ancestor that was a Veteran of the military during the Republic of Texas time period or a citizen who helped settle the Republic. Ethan’s ancestor is Warren Dalby who settled on land in Bowie County, Texas circa 1830, now known as Dalby Springs Community.
