Social worker challenges Hughes for Texas Senate

Democratic candidate for Texas State Senate District 1, Audrey Spanko, isn’t a career politician. With two degrees in social work, both from the University of Texas, she has made her career as a licensed social worker. Working for approximately ten years with nonprofits, she helped families find basic needs and medical care. Between 2016 and 2019, Spanko spent time working child abuse prevention for the Department of Family and Protective Services. Her experience in these areas are what have shaped her campaign platform.

Those in attendance included Titus County’s Republican Chairwoman Sue Evenwel and citizens from Atlanta and Cass County. Jones, a conservative who bills himself as a “kingdom candidate”, pled his case as the choice between himself and Republican candidate Pat Fallon. Jones cited his own Christian conviction, the ill effects of the Marvin Nichols Reservoir and Fallon’s record on eminent domain as reasons for his candidacy. Additionally, Jones charged the congressional district executive committee’s appointment of Fallon as the Republican candidate in August as voter suppression.
