January 31 is deadline for USDA/1890 National Scholars Program

Prairie View A&M University is in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to encourage bright young people to study agriculture, food, natural resource sciences or related disciplines. USDA recently announced that applications are now being accepted for the USDA/1890 National Scholars Program for the 2022/2023 school year. Aspiring high school seniors as well as college freshmen and sophomores are encouraged to apply before the January 31, 2022 deadline.

The area that includes present day Cass County was first organized in 1820 as Miller County, south of the Red River, Territory of Arkansas. Some Miller County records are located in Lewisville, Arkansas, Although a part of the province legally claimed by Mexico, the Mexicans had no interest in settling these north woods which they called The Department of Nacogdoches. Possibly too, they were never aware that Arkansas laid claim to it.

Don Hollanger is a University of Arkansas Hope/Texarkana instructor and longtime solar energy contractor who presented a solar energy demonstration to MUMS STEAM students on Thursday, Dec. 16. STEAM students have been studying both NASA’s and Elon Musk’s plans for viable colonization of Mars and have learned about solar energy powering the systems needed to keep humans alive and machinery functioning on the red planet.
