Linden Public Library celebrated its one-year opening on June 19. A number of friendly faces were there help ing to commemorate the occasion even furry ones. Save’em Acres animal rescue was set up in front with lots of furry friendly animals looking for a new home. Inside patrons looked for books, enjoyed company, and did puzzles. Atlanta City Secretary Danicia Porter presents a certificate to Dr. Sheila Chamberlain for a proclamation in honor of the centennial of Bessie Coleman who on June 15, 1921, became the first African American and Native American female pilot to earn her wings internationally. “..the nonprofit educational Bessie Coleman Aviation All-stars organization, led by Coleman-Brooms, has been planning to commemorate it with a 10-city U.S. tour—part virtual and perhaps part in-person this fall if possible because of the coronavirus pandemic—that will “land” in key places along Bessie Coleman’s journey from her birthplace in Atlanta, Texas to France. The commemoration is to be chaired nationally by aviation pioneer Dr. Sheila Chamberlain, the first U.S. Army African American woman combat intelligence aviator, and former president of the South Florida Chapter of the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals, and a Tuskegee Airmen Legacy Member.” - aopa.org. One of those stops was here in Atlanta, Texas. The birthplace of aviator Bessie Coleman.
