The descendants of Benjamin Hawkins
Louise Hawkins [Louisa in the probate records], daughter of Benjamin Hawkins and Rebecca McIntosh was 5/8 Creek. She was born on December 27, 1833 at Ft. Gibson, Indian Territory and died February 20, 1920 at Checotah, Oklahoma. She is buried at the Checotah City Cemetery. Louise married James C. Scott on Tuesday, April 23, 1850 at Refuge, the name of her mother’s 1900-acre plantation north of present-day New Prospect in Marion County. The newlyweds “with Rebecca Hagerty present” entered into a marriage contract which declared Louisa would be legally “femme sole” (a woman in her own right) and in complete control of all property real or personal that she had acquired before her marriage and would acquire after the marriage. [Cass County Deed Book D, pages 106- 109.] Louis was known for her fine sewing and received a teaching certificate from the first Normal [Teachers] School at Muscogee, Indian Territory in 1883.
